Dear Mother:–
In rest billets again I was in this row of huts a few weeks ago. They are exceptable to the funk holes but still the funk holes look good after several hours of work party.
Just a little discription of two days on work parties. The first day called at about 3 a.m. had breakfast left for work at 4.45 walked about two miles metal rd. carried mats about 8 ft long 2 x 4 with inch slots 14 in. long. until 11 a.m. then back to camp the same the next a.m. then at 10 P.M. called to fall in at 10.30 and walked about four miles then took a bundle of wire or bunch of iron stakes and go two miles farther to front line well that went but we left the loads about one mile short. then when I was back about a mile, I was detailed to help carry a wounded man out so they would be 8 of use and would change relayes. well it took untill about 7.30 to wind me up at camp and I was in pretty good shape, I got tea twice on the road just after I left the dressing station where we left the wounded boy. And they give away cookies with the tea, so it makes a nice little lunch. Well had a good breakfast of porridge bacon lots of bread dipped in bacon fat that I surely like. then I rolled into bed and got ready for work party at 4.30 P.M. which lasted to about 12 midnight about a 12 mile walk load about 1 mile wire. I got a ride about 3 miles in a wagon, and come in feeling fine tonight I am miles away from the front line. And you can't quite realize how thankfull I am to have been guided thru those old shells time after time and never got a scratch. boys being nocked out each day where we walked but still so many keep carrying on.
