Letter to Mother from Somewhere in France

Some where in France
7-17-17[sic]

Dear Mother:–

It is just 12.30 noon we were going to pull off our m.gun competition this P.M. but some one shot over the top of range hill and hit a civilian so the range is condemned and we are just waiting in the hut for further orders.

Bill McDowel, Tierny. I sent you his picture he was a corperal in England, and I went up to the race track last night and I put on his running shoes and striped, and ran a mile in 5 mi. and 40 seconds, te. he. the best brigade runner only made it in 4.57 so I could train a while and give him a rub yet.

I am lying in my bunk now. Adams just passed me over a piece of cake from his freinds some where up to that I was eating candy out of the Ladies Aid box it was home made but I don’t know who made it I will write them a letter thanking them one of these days.

A part of Horace’s letter done me good, it was some thing like this, I feel sorry that you are in such a dangerous place, but to feel that that we are doing our duty is what gives use the satisfaction thru life. Now to me this tutches so much on what my life means to me. I feel such a true full desire to serve God and in this army that I don’t care a bit if I do run into hardship or dander or death. Do you know that some of the boys have a feeling of confidence and trust in a christian I beleave that if it ever come to a pinch that they would listen to me and respect what I said and be game to do what I would say should be done, I have heard one boy telling about a good boy who was killed before he got a chance to prove how brave he was but he was killed trying to complete the work he was put at that night, It is strange but true that good boys go down just like the most wicked often.

Stanley Deason came over to spend the evening with me on Sat. evening. we had a great time. He came over here in Dec.

It is a dandy day.

I got two letters from Harry Lewis since I came to this camp and since I wrote him I would give a lot to see him.

I will finished this later on I have some other letters ready to send.
