Letter to Mother from Mile End Military Hospital, London

[7 September 1918]
WARD 18
MILE END MILITARY
HOSP   BANCROFT ROAD
– LONDON. E –

Dear Mother:–   I am feeling fine today, I had some X RAY– pictures taken of my hand today so I will see tomorrow likely, what the bones look like that are fractured.

Mother I beleave I will be sorry if I don't ask you to send me my little Kodac, for when I get running around in a couple of months I will be wanting to get some snaps of the chums I have and of my self. There are some nice boys here, the same every where one goes.

We have one Australian here that cuts up more with the nurses than any one else, he keeps me laughing a lot of the time.

8th

Well Mother this is sunday and visiting day in the hospital. several women and girls were in. One boy had his girl his mother and sister all up so I guess he was in luck.

I started to read a book today but it is not the kind I would like. I may get a better one from the library.

Say Mother I can't get used to these English girls I never know what to expect in lots of ways so I get badly mixed some times. I guess I may get used to them in time tho.

I got an other inoculation today so I will have a little tender arm tomorrow, they never bother like the first one did at all.

We get cloudy A.M.s, but the sun gets out each P.M. and is very nice.

9th   5.25 P.M.

Dear Mother I got well interested in a book last night so have been reading most of day but there does not seem much to write about in Hosp. We are well fead every thing I could think of expecting. a woman came in today and left me a few sheets of paper envelopes, and a little bag of sweets, fruit drops.

I have money about $40.00 so do not need any while in Hosp. and when I get out I will be able to draw all I need so send[sic] any at all.

A barber came in to our ward this A.M. and gave me a shave, then I sent down

town with some boys and got a pair of sock supporters and  tooth brush and paste so I can have clean teeth again
