Letter to Mother from Somewhere in France
July 22, 1917
A beautifull Sabith morning I am sitting by a small bush about six rods from where the church parade is assembled.

July 23, 1917
I had a little parade this p.m. to get a gass mask and that was all so I come out and had a read by my self, and thot I would write you a few lines before I go back to supper.
July 24, 1917
An other dandy day and evening, it is cloudy and today was sultery but we like it any old way. I had 3 or 4 hours of parade this A.M. after dinner.

Well Mother I received about 30 minutes ago your letter of the 25-30 of June I enjoyed it very much also Kathleens.
July 27, 1917
After I went to bed in my funk hole last night I could see out the door, rather the hole that might have a door hung but hasent, and the half moon was sinking nicely in west.
July 28, 1917
I received $200 worth of tracts I sent for to distribute among the boys. I took some down to the counter at the Y.M.C.A. about 100 yds from the dugout.

I just received three letters tonight two of yours one of Teds and one of Kates inclosed. I do get such good out off your letters.
August 1, 1917
No parade today blew so I beat it for the Y to write letters. I wrote one to Joe Crebo a transport lad that got wounded, and one to the Chaplain of our old Batt.
August 2, 1917
We have had a little damp weather the last two days so I have held down a nice hut. we got paid yesterday, so, the money flew around pretty plentifull last night every one getting a feed.
August 5, 1917
I am sitting out on the grass about 200 yds from my dugout. Moter while I think, the thing I would like the most is that you would send me the “Onwards” any time you get them.
August 9, 1917
We just got back from a bath. I got a new pair home knit socks that had never been worn or washed clean change of cloths.
August 10, 1917
I am sitting dry and cosey in my bunk. I havent a top bunk on mine but the floor bunk of boards. the center bunk is board to I told you of my top bunk before the wire one.
August 13, 1917
I am considerably to full tonight and it is some time since I had supper but I felt like eating and had lots of hash the we call mystery and good gravy with bread I drank to much tea I think after.

Mother remember these words in the song “just before the battle Mother I am thinking most of you” Well I have experienced that now and it is true to life

Just a line tonight for I feel like writing you, now, I am siting in a trench my feet against the side of my funk hole my back against the other side of the trench

I am siting a few hundred yds from no mans land, enjoying the real joy of living as much here as I could any where in the world

I was afraid I would never receive that parcel for it come when I was up the line and one of our boys was out at the place the mail was kept,

It started to rain today so we are lucky that we are in rest billet while it is wet.

I am planning on writing you Alice and Tiddy[sic] each a page I wrote Horace since I wrote them I beleave

I just come in out of a shell hole on the side hill where the wind don’t hit and the sun shone warm so I did have a good sleep. We are going to be buisy to night so a good snooze to day was quite approprate.

I am sitting in a trench enjoying the sun and listening to large artillery shells go over head,

We never got those pictures taken before we left Witley and Leeper died of wounds since the poor boy, so many of those boys I have talked with and do all I could to get to change, and they are steping over the line to face God as a judge after all.

This is one of the grandest Sept days. I have always favored the Autom to any time of year, I can remember once back at school a lot of use kids walked out to the couley for plums

This has been another good day, there is a few clouds coming up now, I have been out here on on the grass for a cupple of hours reading and now I will write you a few lines before I go in.
